Jeremiah told Baruch to go into the temple and read it tothe people, that they might repent in time. When the kingheard of the book he said, Go and fetch the roll. And theyread all to the king, the princes standing by, listening. It was a cold day. There was a warm fire in the brazieron the floor. The words of the Lord angered the king. He took someparts of the roll and cut them with his knife and threw theminto the fire. Oh, the king was not afraid of Gods words! Then the Lord said, Jeremiah, write those words again.He did write. And he added besides those words, manylike them. In this new roll God said He would punish theking and his people. The king of Babylon would come andtake the king of Israel and the land. The poor heart of Jeremiah — how it ached for his people!How often he wept and cried to God because his peoplewould not repent! Jer. 36.

BIBLE PRIMER 101 48. THE THREE MEN IN THE FIERY FURNACE. When the king of Babylon came to Israel, he carried awaythe young man Daniel, too. Daniel loved God with all his heart. The king right soon began to favor Daniel. He gave himriches. He even put him over a part of his land, like a judge. Daniel had three friends who also came to Babylon. Whatbig names they had: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego!Can you say them ? The king was pleased with these threeyoung men. This made some of the kings men jealous.They said one day: We will crush Shadrach, Meshach, andAbednego. We will ask the king to make an image of gold.All must then fall down and pray to it.
